Abstract

Positive and negative behavioral contrast was investigated ¡it tite key pecking of six pigeons. In one pitase of tite experiment food was response-independent; ¡it tite other, it ittzs response.dependent Food iws delivered according tu a two-component multiple schedule variable interval-variable interval of variable interval-extinction. A witite key was always present, and tite components were signa?ed by a second stimulus: eititer tite transilumination by a red or green ligitt of a second key or tite presence vs absence of Qn intermittent tone. No key pecking was observed witen reinforcetnent ~ws response-independent and presented at different rates ¡it tite two cotnponents. Positive and negative con trast xtxzs observed itt al? tite birds discritninating tite presence vs abs ence of a tone. Only titree of tite six birds sitowed reliable positive con trast witen tite illumination of tite second key served as tite discriminative stimulus During titis condition only une bird pecked at tite signal key Diese results did not replica te previous findings, and cast doubts on accounts of beitavioral con trast based oit tite interaction between elicited and instrumental responses.
